The EDP team took part in the AHRC's 2016 Connected Communities Research Festival with a project called Prototyping Utopias.

The project built on our relationship with longitudinal project Bow Church and connections with other local organisations in Bow: Bow Arts, Bromley by Bow Centre and Poplar HARCA. Outputs from the activities were shared at a major public exhibition, the Utopia Fair at Somerset House in central London, between 24th and 26th June 2016.

Bow Church provided a beautiful setting for an Open Day event, a welcoming place for people from all walks of life: families with children, tourists, young and old, and people who are isolated or marginalised. One of the key insights of the project was the high value people placed on the availability of such free spaces where local people can meet, have conversations and make things together. With a few resources, like arts and crafts materials and a lending ear, unexpected places like the church, can become catalysts for random encounters, potentially leading to the generation of community visions and actions.
